A magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred at a depth of 210.1 km (130 miles). The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 5.1 aftershock approximately 30 minutes later. The epicenters of both earthquakes were located northwest of the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu.
