A magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred at a depth of 210.1 km (130 miles). The earthquake was followed by a magnitude 5.1 aftershock approximately 30 minutes later. The epicenters of both earthquakes were located northwest of the Tongan island of Niuatoputapu.

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred 203.5 km (126.4 mi) west of Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia at a depth of 15.5 km (9.6 mi).
