Accurate modeling of seafloor deformation associated with tsunamis is essential for a robust warning system and to understand the secondary hazards posed by earthquakes. The adjoint-state method for tsunami source imaging addresses the speed-accuracy trade-off in tsunami warning systems without assuming the earthquake’s fault geometry. In this webinar, I will present the results of our studies that advanced the method by 1) applying it to the 2024 Mw 7.5 Noto Peninsula, Japan earthquake and tsunami in an attempt to resolve a seafloor landslide recorded by a coastal survey, and 2) testing the time-dependent version of the inversion method on simple and complex tsunami sources.
