Both irisws-traveltime and irisws-distaz are legacy web services that offer seismic travel-time and distance-azimuth calculations, respectively, and will soon be retired.
What: Retirement of the following services:
• irisws-traveltime: http://service.iris.edu/irisws/traveltime/1/
• irisws-distaz: http://service.iris.edu/irisws/distaz/1/
When: August 27, 2026
Users should transition to the TauP Toolkit library or the Python package ‘ObsPy’ for these calculations. These alternatives offer robust, modern support for both travel-time and distance-azimuth functionality. ObsPy, in particular, serves as a popular and widely-used option for researchers.
The TauP Toolkit (Philip Crotwell, University of South Carolina) is available here.
You can find the ObsPy repository on GitHub, with travel-time functionality implemented in the obspy.taup module.
As a part of decommissioning these services, we will also remove documented references to them or mark them as defunct. Please reach out to help@earthscope.org if you have any questions.
