EarthScope Data Services will be retiring the FDSN “event” web service as a part of our effort to refine the NSF National Geophysical Facility’s portfolio of data and metadata access capabilities in the cloud.
What: Retirement of http://service.iris.edu/fdsnws/event/1/
When:
- April 17, 2026 – Delisting from discovery mechanisms
- June 1, 2026 – Full retirement of the service
Authoritative replacement services exist. We ask current users and developers to begin their transition to these endpoints:
- ISC: https://www.isc.ac.uk/fdsnws/event/1/ (note: no mirror at EarthScope)
- NEIC: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/fdsnws/event/1/
EarthScope will continue to maintain and develop applications and products that rely on earthquake events (e.g., WILBER, GMV), but it will utilize event information from institutions such as those listed above.
As a part of decommissioning the event service, we will also remove the ”eventService” entry from our entry in the Federator service, and remove the application.wadl resource used for discovery.
