Deprecation for irisFetch MATLAB client

Tags: data services

We regret to inform you that the irisFetch Matlab-based client is not compatible with recently released Matlab versions 2023a and onward. Starting with version 2023a, significant changes were made to the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) that is included with each new release of Matlab. Unfortunately, these changes have made the IRIS-WS Java library, which supports the web service calls made through irisFetch to retrieve data, no longer functional.

It is important to note that the irisFetch client and most recent version of the IRIS-WS library (v. 2.20.1) will continue to work, but only with Matlab versions 2022b and prior. At this point, no further updates to irisFetch or to the IRIS-WS Java library are to be expected and there are no plans to continue to support this software in the future.

The most recent versions of both irisFetch.m and the IRIS-WS library are available for download.

Going forward, we recognize the importance of being able to use Matlab to access the NSF SAGE data archives and hope to have more news on this front at a later date. We are currently developing an Application Programming Interface (API) that will enable users to access the data repositories through a variety of programming languages.

If you have any questions or issues while using irisFetch with older versions of Matlab, please reach out to data-help@earthscope.org and we’ll gladly answer any questions promptly.

Thank you for your continued support of irisFetch over the last 10 years.
