Cycle 1 Core Samples Taken in 2008:
The SAFOD Core Viewer available here displays location and data pertaining to core material samples taken in 2008 during the cycle one processing.
Aproximately 190 samples were distributed to 18 investigators/groups over the past year by IODP personnel, headed by John Firth. The Gulf Coast Repository (GCR) prepares and distributes approved samples to the requesting investigators.
Sample taken data and images are available by clicking on the colored shape overlays on the Core Section image displayed in the Core Viewer above, or by clicking the Intervale or Mass hyperlinks in the table to the left. Click the sample taken image in the Info Bubble to see additional sample taken images. ( Mozilla Firefox Browsers Only )
For further information, please review the PDF document SAFOD Core Distribution or contact the
EarthScope Program Director at the National Science Foundation (kshedloc@nsf.gov).

SAFOD Core Viewer
Browser Support:
The SAFOD Core Viewer only supports the freely available Mozzila web browser called Firefox. It is highly recommended that you install and utilize this browser when working with SAFOD Core Viewer functionality.
Usability of the SAFOD Core Viewer varies in other browsers based primarily on W3C compliance and Google Maps API compatability. Microsoft Internet Explorer does not comply with W3C standards and is not fully supported. Some features may not function fully other browsers.
Operation:
Primarily developed for the purpose of viewing high resolution images of SAFOD Phase III coring sections online in an intuitive, dynamic manner, the SAFOD Core Viewer utilizes the Google Maps Application Programming Interface (API) as the primary means for display and navigation of the core images, facilitating the zooming and panning controls.
The core viewer only has four (4) zoom levels.
Only one core section is shown at a time, which is repeated horizontally.
Zoom in and out with Mouse Wheel or use Google Maps Tool at upper left - [ + ] [ - ].
Pan in any direction holding down left mouse button and draging mouse or laterally and horizontally using the Google Maps Tool at upper left - [ <- ] [ -> ].
Selecting Hole/Run Sections:
The core images can only be viewed one section at a time and are grouped by Hole/Run, for which there are two coring holes for SAFOD Phase III samples, Hole E and Hole G. Hole E has two coring runs and Hole G has six, each run consisting of 2 or more coring sections. It is at the coring section level for which high resolition imagery is presented and sample requests are submitted.
The first drop-down menu at the upper right allows you to select a Hole/Run, at which time loads the section one imagery and dynamically makes each available section selectable in the second drop-down menu. The second drop-down menu to the right allows you to select a desired section applicable to your selected Hole/Run.
Please note that each core section image is repeated horizontally and that these are not sequential core sections! This is an artifact of the Google Maps Interface, which presumes the underlying image to be repeatable, such as a map of the Earth. Therefore, it behaves as if the right edge of the image matches the left edge of the image, and thus creates the horizontal tiling.
Sample Taken Polylines and Information Bubbles
The Google Maps API allows for dynamic rendering of colored polylines based on latitude and longitude values. Data obtained from samples taken during 2008 have been digitized into the SAFOD Core Viewer's database and are used to dynamically draw polylines over the core images. These polylines identify an approximate location where core material has been taken.
The Google Maps API also allows for dynamic display of information pertinent to a location identified with latitude and longitude values via an 'Info Bubble'. Data associated with core samples taken in 2008 are available by clicking on the area surrounded by polylines or clicking the corresponding Interval or Mass link in the Sample Taken Data table found below the core viewer. A Google Maps Info Bubble will appear with related sample information. Click anywhere on the core image or on the X at the upper right of the bubble to close.
An image of the coring material taken from the identified portion of the core section is typically displayed in the information bubble. You may click on the image to get a larger view of the sample and any additional images of the sampling process. (Multiple image viewing fully supported only in Mozilla Firefox Web Browser. Move mouse to Right side of image to select NEXT or left side of image to select PREVIOUS. Click CLOSE at the lower right or anywhere on the web page to return to the core sample information being displayed.)

Core Sample Request Information and Guidelines
Requests for SAFOD core and cutting samples will be entertained approximately every
six months according to established target dates posted annually on the EarthScope
and ICDP websites. The next target date is February 9, 2009. Requests received
and made available to the SSC and to the NSF, will be reviewed. Recommendations for approval will be consolidated into a final report and sent to the NSF.
NOTE: The SAFOD Core Viewer ONLY supports the freely available web browser Mozzila Firefox. It is highly recommended that you install and utilize this browser when working with SAFOD Core Viewer functionality. Usability of the SAFOD Core Viewer varies in other browsers based primarily on W3C compliance and Google Maps API compatibility.
1. Register: You must register on the EarthScope website at http://www.earthscope.org/data/safod_registration under an existing Principal Investigator (PI) Group or you may create a new PI Group for which you will be considered the Lead Investigator.
2. Sign In: In order to enable sample request submission and editing functionality, you must sign into the SAFOD Core Samples website hosted on the EarthScope website at http://www.earthscope.org/data/safod_core_samples . Enter your Email address and password at the top right and 'Click' the Login Button. Once authenticated, you should see your full name where the login dialog box was previously. This enables sample request functionality below that is not available without being signed in.
3. Submit Sample Requests: If you authorized by your PI Group Lead Investigator to 'Edit' sample requests, or you are the 'Lead Investigator' for your PI Group, you may begin submitting sample requests, one at a time utilizing the Sample Request Form found under the 'Sample Request Form' tab above the Core Viewer.
4. Digitize Sample Requests: If you authorized by your PI Group Lead Investigator to 'Edit' sample requests, or you are the 'Lead Investigator' for your PI Group, you may begin digitizing your 'Submitted Sample Requests' into the Core Viewer system using the 'Digitize Selected Request' button found at lower right area of the SAFOD Core Viewer under the 'Core Viewer' tab.
5. Edit or Delete Sample Requests: If you authorized by your PI Group Lead Investigator to 'Edit' sample requests, or you are the 'Lead Investigator' for your PI Group, you may edit or delete your submitted sample request data using the 'Edit' or 'Delete' option that appears when you click on a sample request under the 'My Samples' tab.
Submit all sample requests by the request submit closure date. The functionality to submit new sample requests found under the 'Sample Request Form' tab will be disabled. You will be allowed to view all Cycle Two sample requests and edit or delete your PI Group's existing sample requests until the final request closure date.
Edit or delete all sample requests by the final sample request closure date. All edit and delete functionality to will be disabled. You will only be allowed to view existing sample reuqests from this date forward.
